Taking care of toddlers is not an easy task for many of us. For some parenting tips from the sleep experts keep on reading:

Be Happy – At the end of the day your toddler just wants to feel loved.  But more than this, toddlers can feel our stress and anxiety as a parent. It’s important as a parent to keep hold of your emotions and stress levels where possible as this will help your little ones feel calmer and happier.

Parenting Advice

Hug them regularly – This is an important tip which you should never forget. Feeling loved is something all children crave as well as physical contact. There is nothing like a mother’s hug. Your children are only little for such a short time so hug them regularly and let them know they’re very loved.

Good Parenting Tips

Play together– Put away some special mummy/daddy time each day where you can spend some quality time together either playing games or reading stories. Children always want their parent’s attention and they will look forward to that special time you spend together every day.

 Parenting Advice for Toddlers

Tell them interesting stories – Times have changed a lot since us parents were children. Telling your children stories from your own childhood will not only increase their knowledge but it will also help their imaginations develop.

Talk to your toddler continuously – This is very important because if you talk to them regularly they will also try to respond to you. Further, it will help them learn different words and how sentences are put together. As time goes on, your toddler will start asking more and more questions of you!

Parenting Tips for Toddler

Lots of play-dates – It takes young children a little while to learn how to actually play ‘with’ other children. When they are little they moreso play ‘next to’ other children rather than ‘with’ them. However, this is no reason not to let your children have play-dates. Whilst playing ‘next to’ each other children learn so much from how other children do things. Further, it teaches the concept of sharing and playing alongside other children kindly.

How to Create Healthy Eating Habits
How to Create Healthy Eating Habits

Getting your toddler to eat a healthy diet is one of the things that parents of young children complain about the most. However, a nutritious and balanced diet is crucial for healthy development and good sleep. Have a read through our tips below to get your child eating a healthy diet.

Choices – Toddlers likes and dislikes (including likes and dislikes of food) change on a daily basis. One way to overcome this problem is offering your toddler a choice of different healthy options that they can choose from. Not only is there a range of food, but young children also love the independence of getting to choose the food they eat themselves.

 Healthy Eating Habits

Don’t force them to eat – The general rule of thumb is that your toddler will not starve. If they choose not to eat what you have placed in front of them then that’s ok. Put the food aside, don’t offer any other foods and when they are hungry, offer this same food.

Know the likes and dislikes of your toddler – By trying different foods and choices, you will get to know what foods your child likes and dislikes. There is nothing wrong by feeding them the same thing every day if it’s healthy and balanced.

 Healthy Eating Habits

Make it fun – Cutting toddler’s food in different shapes that they can relate to will help get them excited about eating. Make it fun for them so eating is an experience they look forward to rather than hate.

Involve your toddler – Get your toddler involved in the cooking and preparation of their food. Show them how their food is made and give them jobs to do in the kitchen. You will surprised at how much more enticing their food will look to them if they have been involved in the preparation/cooking process.

 Healthy Eating Habits

Food is crucial for healthy development and will also encourage good sleeping habits. For more tips and hints head to https://www.sleepystarz.com/ .

How to Avoid Toddler Bedtime Battles
How to Avoid Toddler Bedtime Battles

We all know that dealing with toddlers is not an easy task at times. You often have to use a lot of different techniques to get your child to sleep. Often toddlers will resist sleep and it can be a challenging task for a parent to settle them. However, the good news is that there are ways to avoid toddler bedtime battles and some of them are mentioned below:

Toddler Bedtime Battles

Ensure your toddler is ready to sleep – Both overtiredness and undertiredness can affect your toddler’s ability to get to sleep. Ensure that you are not putting your child to bed too early. If they are not tired enough they will not sleep. On the opposite end, also ensure that your toddler is not overtired. Overtiredness will also make it very difficult for your toddler to get to sleep. Watch out for overtired signs in the lead up to bedtime and if you notice that your little one is showing these signs then bring the bedtime forward.

Toddler Bedtime Story

Routine- A good bedtime routine in the 30 minutes prior to bedtime is a must. Young children strive off routine and they will sleep a lot better if a good bedtime routine is in place. Things to include in a good bedtime routine include bath, bottle/breast/cup of milk, massage, story, cuddle etc.

Independence – Toddlers like to feel important and special in everything they do. Try and find a little job that they can do that is part of the bedtime routine. The job only has to be little such as switching off the light, turning on the night light or putting their book away. You will be surprised at the sense of independence they feel and how this positively affects their sleep.

Toddler Bedtime

Dark room – Ensure that the light outside is blocked out. Often during daylight savings time, it’s still light when you put your toddler to sleep and this can affect sleep. If you can block out the light from outside then this is best. A dim nightlight is fine however.

Dim the lights 30 minutes before bed – Darkness helps produce melatonin which is also known as the sleepy hormone. Dimming the lights 30 minutes before sleep time helps melatonin built in your child’s

Ensure the room is at the correct temperature – Temperature can hugely affect your toddler’s ability to get to sleep. It’s important to ensure your child’s room is not too hot and not too cold as well as ensure they are dressed appropriately. It’s also important to take into consideration that the coldest part of the night is around 4:00-5:00am so your toddler also needs to be dressed appropriately for this time of night.

The Story Behind the Sleepy Starz Sleep Training Clock
The Story Behind the Sleepy Starz Sleep Training Clock

A couple in Melbourne faced the same problem all parents of toddlers face – and came out victorious.

After struggling with sleep deprivation as a result of their child’s poorly regulated sleep schedules during their toddlerhood, Emily and Nathaniel Duffell, the co-founders of Sleepy Starz Pty Ltd came up with the idea of creating a device that would help parents around the globe remember what a good night’s sleep feels like – and help their toddlers get acquainted with the notion too.

Sleepy Starz Toddler Wake up Clock

The result is the Sleepy Starz Sleep Clock, a revolutionary toddler sleep training clock that is designed to regulate toddlers’ sleep cycles and help them sleep throughout the night. Featuring different scenes in which the child can choose from and child-friendly images, the Sleepy Starz Sleep Clock keeps toddlers engaged all whilst initiating them to the sleep process including falling asleep independently as well as staying in bed until the ‘wake up time’ chosen and preset by the parent.

Acknowledging that all children are different and that parents choose different sleep training styles, the Sleepy Starz Sleep Clock comes with three different sleep settings, allowing parents to select the setting they feel suits their child’s temperament and personality best.

Sleepy Starz Sleep Clock

The aforementioned sleep settings including Simple, Moon Crossover and Star Countdown offer different night time set ups, while parents and children can also choose one of the clock’s 7 loveable scenes to be projected onto the clock during the night.

What’s more, the Sleepy Starz Sleep Clock comes with more features than ever seen before including a brightness controller, picture story book, 15 minute countdown timer and a lock feature while all its options can be easily configured through its high-tech touch screen.

Toddler Sleep Training Clock

Commenting on their invention, the founders of Sleepy Starz said “As seasoned parents, we saw firsthand the toll that sleep-deprivation took on both ourselves and our daughter. We experimented with many sleep training methods, but nothing worked. This is when we came up with the idea to create a device which would make sleep training natural and enjoyable for young children, while also allowing parents to control the process, too”.

Each Sleepy Starz Sleep Training Clock comes with a free teddy bear called ‘Sleep Tight Ted’ who not only features in the clock but also stars in the 7 page picture story book. Children love the association of the teddy bear with the clock.

Sleepy Starz Sleep Training Clock

The Sleepy Starz Sleep Training Clock has been granted an Australian innovation patent (Patent number: 2015101639), and has a patent pending in the USA.

The Sleepy Starz Sleep Clock is available for purchase at www.sleepystarz.com/sleep-clock/  and will be through stockists soon.

What I Was Never Told About Being a Father of 2 Daughters
What I Was Never Told About Being a Father of 2 Daughters

Within seconds of Emily announcing her first positive pregnancy test back in 2008 my mind turned to which brand of cricket bat I should invest in, and whether my growing boy would prefer to play for the Wallabies or Kangaroos. You can probably imagine my surprise when daughter Amber arrived just eight short months later. Subsequently, everything in my household began to turn a lighter shade of pink, and I became immersed in tea parties and dress ups (although I quite enjoy the odd tea party from time to time).

father of two daughters

The ensuingcouple of years after Amberwas born were extremely tough as my wife and I navigated ongoing toddler sleeping issues andsuffered severe sleep deprivation. But despite a rough ride early on,we’re now parents to two gorgeous young girls that continually furnish our lives with fun and laughter.

Having daughters is one of the greatest joys I could imagine, although it’s fair to say that as the only male in a family of four, I certainly haven’t got them all figured out. I thought I would fill you in on a few things I’ve learnt about being the father to two beautiful girls.

two daughters

There should be a degree in tying ponytails
My girls will (hopefully) tell you that dad can fashion a killer ponytail nowadays, and even a plait or two on occasion. Though, somebody neglected to inform me at the outset how difficult this task could be! Admittedly, Emily does the lion’s share of hair management, but on the odd time she was pre-disposed I was left floundering with brush and bobble in hand. It took some time, and tears (not mine), but I am happy to say I’ve now nailed it!

Painted nails take an age to remove
Young girls seem to love to paint toenails and fingernails.Mine are no different. Oneoccasion Irelented, allowing them to unleash their artistry on my fingers. That was before I realized how long it took to remove nail polish (in absence of polish remover!) which provided great source of ammunition for my male friends.

daughterGirls are easier
I never thought I’d admit this, but I am convinced girls are easier to manage than boys. Clearly,my only basis for comparisonis friends with boys, and the familiar cry ‘wait until she is ateenager’ is already ringing in my ears’. But aside from the sleep issues we encountered in the early years (which I don’t believe is gender specific),our girls have beenpretty easy going. You always know what colour clothes they want to wear (it’s pink), and you don’t need to worry about pointing the pipework down while unfastening a nappy for fear of a ‘hose down’.

daughter

Nobody told me how quickly they would pay attention to boys
Perhaps naively, I thought it was boys who would be the romantic aggressors and that my girls would have limited interest in the opposite sex for several years. I couldn’t have been more wrong. It really is true that girls begin planning their weddings even when they are toddlers! At the outset, the ‘boy’ of choice was me…“I’m going to marry Daddy”. Cute. I was soon crushed when the little boy from day care with the attractive curls replaced me as the boy of her dreams!

The final thing no one told me about my female dominated family is perhaps the most noteworthy. When Emily and I started raising a family way back in 2008 I had no idea that living solely with girls would immediately turn me into a feminist!

Is It Ok To Help My Baby Get To Sleep?
Is It Ok To Help My Baby Get To Sleep?

“Is it okay to assist my baby to sleep?” The answer is yes. Your child’s health is likely to be a high priority and you already know that kids get very cranky and difficult if they don’t get enough sleep!

This is a controversial topic as some believe that assisting a baby to sleep will stop them learning the skill of self settling. I disagree. I do not see a problem with assisting a baby or young child to sleep. Having difficulty falling asleep is a common problem and some babies and children need more help in this area.

‘Assisting’ to sleep can include a variety of different things such as feeding to sleep, patting to sleep or just being in the child’s room with them and singing. No matter what method you choose to help your little one fall asleep…..it’s ok!

help baby get to sleep

Young babies especially often need a lot of help falling to sleep. Self settling is a skill that needs to be learnt and takes time. Some babies might learn this skill early on but it might take others well into the toddler years to learn. Is it ok to help a 3 year old fall asleep? In my opinion, the answer is yes as long as the parent is comfortable in doing so.

I believe it’s a myth that assisting a baby to sleep will cause them to never learn the skill of self settling. When a child is ready to fall asleep independently they will do so. What I do encourage parents to do though, is to only help the child fall asleep if they need it. If they don’t need assistance in falling to sleep then there is no need to do it.

help baby get to sleep

Some parents find they get quite anxious about their child learning to self settle. It’s important for parents to manage expectations. Is it ok to expect a 5 month old to fall asleep on their own? No, I don’t believe it is. Some 5 month old babies might be able to get to sleep by themselves, but if they cannot then there is no issue in helping them. This will not stop them learning the skill of self settling when they are ready.

Is it ok to expect a 3 year old to fall asleep independently? Whilst I don’t believe it’s ok to “expect” them to do so, I do believe its fine for a parent of a 3 year old to want them to learn this skill. And, there are lots of different things that can be done to help them learn the skill of self settling.

help baby get to sleep

As a sleep consultant I work with a lot of families who are keen to teach their babies and young children the skill of self settling. If the baby is of an appropriate age then I work closely with the baby and the parents to gently teach this skill using a variety of sleep training methods. Sometimes it only takes a matter of days for the baby to pick up this new skill but sometimes it takes 2-3 weeks.
