A GUIDE TO SLEEPY FOODS

A GUIDE TO SLEEPY FOODS

We all get those night time urges to stuff our faces with every delicious treat in the fridge, especially the kids. Whilst they weren’t hungry at 6pm when they had chicken and vegetables on their plate, they always seem starving for anything sweet by the time bedtime rolls around. However, if you find that your little ones are having trouble falling asleep or waking throughout the night, you might want to think twice about the night time snacks you give your children as they can impact upon sleep.

After dinner, our bodies automatically begin preparing for sleep by naturally slowing our metabolic rate. What does this mean in English? It means that our body slows the rate at which it burns calories. The only calories our body should burn during sleep are the ones required to keep our heart beating, our lungs pumping and all of the other things required to keep us alive. When you eat right before bed, your body is forced to spend energy on digesting that food during the night. Sleep is supposed to reenergize you, not fatigue you! In addition, food may not properly digest during the night, which can lead to stomach cramps and bloating the following day. When you feel bloated or cramped, it is often a result of the gas and food particles left over from improper digestion. And, the same goes for children!

Sleep is the most valuable tool you possess as a human being and is crucial for healthy growth and development in children. During sleep, your body releases 80% of its powerful fat burning, muscle-building hormone called HGH (human growth hormone). Breakfast jumpstarts your metabolism after it has slowed during the night. That’s right, eating actually increases your metabolism! If you eat the right foods, you can dramatically boost your metabolism.

If you find that your kids need that night time snack then choosing the right foods that will not impact upon their quality of sleep. There are certain foods that contain high levels of tryptophan AKA ‘the sleepy hormone’. And, foods with high levels of tryptophan are the best night time snacks for your little ones.

Bananas contain high levels of potassium and magnesium making them one of the best foods for promoting sleep. The potassium is great for cardiovascular health and cognitive functioning, and the magnesium helps relax the muscles. Other foods that contain tryptophan include cheese, pineapple, tofu, salmon and turkey. Milk also contains tryptophan and can help children feel calm before bedtime.

NEWBORN SLEEP TIPS

NEWBORN SLEEP TIPS

Having a newborn baby in your life, especially as a first time parent can be not only daunting but also a very challenging experience (as well as rewarding of course!) However, it comes as a shock to a lot of first time parents in relation to how a newborn’s sleep pattern works (or doesn’t work).

In the early months of a newborn’s life sleep occurs around the clock and the sleep-wake cycle works in conjunction with the need to be fed, changed and nurtured. Generally, a newborn baby needs between 10.5 – 18 hours of sleep and will have an irregular schedule. ‘Awake times’ are usually between 1-3 hours in length but each baby is different and sometimes a newborn won’t be able to stay awake for 1 hour at a time. The sleep period itself can last anywhere from a few minutes to several hours at a time. Newborns and babies in general are very active sleepers and it’s normal for them to be active in their sleep. Parents often report seeing their baby twitch their arms and legs, smile, suck and generally appear to be restless.

Tip 1

It’s been reported that newborns who are kept close to their mum/caregiver during the daytime  sleep better at night-time. The feeling of closeness they feel to their parent during the day helps prevent stress hence why they sleep better at night. Therefore, it can be a good idea to wear and hold your baby throughout the day.

Tip 2

It’s important to feed your baby regularly throughout the day to promote better night sleeping. It’s also been reported that ‘cluster’ feeding at the end of the can help promote better night sleep, however do not give a baby under 4-5 months cereal or Farax. If your baby has been asleep for 3 or more hours during the day, I recommend waking them for a feed so as to help promote a longer sleep at night time.

Tip 3

After approximately 2 week of age, it’s possible to introduce a very relaxed schedule. Whilst a newborn is still too young to have a proper routine in place, a relaxed schedule based around feeding and nap times can be very helpful to both the baby and the parent. In the early days, it can be very hard to settle a newborn before 9-10pm at night time. However, as the weeks progress, an early bedtime is encouraged with the eventual aim of a bedtime around 7pm.

Tip 4

Babies and children read their parent’s stress cues very easily and often feed off these cues. It’s important to always remain as calm as possible, even in a stressful situation so as to promote a feeling of calmness and relaxation in the baby.

Tip 5

First time parents often fail to notice their baby’s tired signs. Overtiredness makes it harder for babies to fall asleep due to chemical changes in their body which in turn triggers a fighting response to fatigue. Tired signs include, rubbing of eyes, yawning, arching of the back, red/glazy eyes, crying etc. Parents can help overcome overtiredness by not only putting their baby to bed earlier, but also vigilantly watching out for their baby’s tired signs and learning what their child’s tired signs are.

Sleep Consulting by Sleepy Starz are passionate about helping parents with any sort of sleep issues being experienced. FUNNY THINGS CHILDREN SAY

FUNNY THINGS CHILDREN SAY

If I kept a record of all of the funny things my kids have said to me, I really think that I could put a book together. I love that children are so genuine and sincere and when they say something funny, many times it’s not meant to get laughs. It often comes from an entirely new point of view and they are really serious when they’re saying it which makes it even more adorable.

Children look at things with no reference points. In other words, everything they see or hear or say is generally for the first time. For instance, a mother and father were standing on the patio with their three-year-old daughter when it started to rain. The father, looking up at the grey clouds said, "It looks like it’s going to rain cats and dogs." The little girl slowly raised her head and looked up into the sky was about to drop cats and dogs from the very clouds above their heads. She looked at her mum, and then her dad and said, "Can we keep them?"

The world is big and new to kids and so is everything they see. That’s one of the reasons parents like to hang around and play with their kids; because the parents get to see the world from a whole new point of view. A point of view they have forgotten. (The other reason, of course, is that the parents love their children more than anything else in the world).

Besides funny things they say, children actually say some pretty interesting things that we, as adults learn from. A mum, dad and their four year old daughter were sitting at the little girl’s plastic play table having dinner, like they did every night, and the little girl says to them in a rather sad and serious tone, "Why am I so different?" The father didn’t know what to say and replied with "You’re not different". The mother immediately jumped in with, "You’re different because you are so smart and brilliant, and you are so beautiful and everyone loves you so much!" The mother just went on and on and on and it was truly amazing how she lovingly tried to make her daughter feel good about herself. After they all calmed down, the rest of the dinner was normal, but the parents were really bothered by what the daughter had said. "Where could she have gotten that idea?" they thought.

The parents were stumped by their daughter’s thinking of herself as different from everybody else. They just couldn’t figure out why she felt that way. A few days later the three of them were watching a DVD that they had seen many times before. It was called "Tarzan," (the animated version). The family was enjoying the movie when the scene comes up where little Tarzan puts mud on his face trying to look like his adopted mother, the ape. It just doesn’t work for him and he says, "Why am I so different?" in a sad and serious tone. The mother and father of the little girl, watching the film, look at each other with huge smiles on their faces as they realize that their beautiful little daughter always has wonderful and funny things to say.

It’s important that we listen and cherish these moments with our children. They grow up so fast and they have such vast knowledge to input and share.

IMPORTANCE OF A GOOD BEDTIME ROUTINE

IMPORTANCE OF A GOOD BEDTIME ROUTINE

Having a child who finds it hard to go to sleep at night, or who keeps getting up in the night can be a big problem for tired and stressed parents. Adults and children both need to have a good sleep and if they don’t, getting through the day can be hard.

One of the most important things for both adults and children to help set your body up for a good night sleep is implementing a positive bedtime routine. Bedtime routines let your body know that you are preparing for sleep and your body can start to make the necessary adjustments and changes to help you to be able to get to sleep more easily.

Children especially, like routine and strive off routine. It is safe and comforting to know what is going to happen and when. There is so much to learn when you are little that it can be frightening and unsettling to have things happening in different ways each night.

Decide what a good bedtime is for your child not for you. For older babies and toddler, 7-7.30pm is a healthy choice of bedtime. Children between 1 and 3 years old need between 12-14 hours over a 24 hour period. Children aged 3-6 years need 10 -12 hours a night and don’t usually have a nap in the day. A lot of children don’t get this much sleep and struggle to get through the day.

You will need to start the bedtime routine about 30 minutes before you want your child to be asleep. So, if the sleep time is 7 p.m., you will need to begin at 6.30pm. Start to quieten things down – stop stimulating things like TV and electronic things. Dim the lights to help your child get the surge of melatonin they need to help them fall asleep.

One thing is certain and that is all children will fall asleep better if they are eased into it in a relaxing manner. Set your child’s bedtime to be the same every single night. Young kids generally do better with some quiet time just before bed. This may include several things such as:

  • A small healthy snack
  • Story time with great bedtime story books
  • Use of a sleep clock
  • Soft and soothing lullaby music
  • A warm bath or shower
  • Some relaxing and positive conversation with family

Bedtime Comforts

Make certain your child has comfy pyjamas and that they are dressed appropriately for the weather. You must know how uncomfortable it can be to fall asleep in certain clothes and materials. Even though your child can’t always express this, they fall asleep much more easily when what their wearing is soft and comfortable. Let them get involved in the bedtime process and even give them some control over the process. This could involve their choice of book, choosing the settings on their sleep clock or something as simple as turning the light off.

One of the most successful products out on the market which makes for a great bedtime comfort, is the Sleepy Starz Sleep Clock. It has more features than any other clock on the market such as a picture story book, choice of scenes and settings, brightness controller and15 minute countdown timer. The clock gives the child a choice and gets them involved in the bedtime process. For more information on the Sleepy Starz Sleep Clock, head to www.sleepystarz.com/sleep-clock/

Nightmares and Night Terrors in Toddlers

Nightmares and Night Terrors in Toddlers

Nightmares and night terrors are a common occurrence in toddlers and pre-school aged children. In the toddler years, little imaginations begin to develop and this can be a cause of nightmares and night terrors. However, there are other factors which can also lead to these occurrences including:

  • Fears;
  • TV;
  • Negative experiences;
  • Technology – iPads, phones etc;
  • Stress;
  • Overtiredness.

Before we proceed with what parents can do with toddlers who experience nightmares or night-terrors it’s important to note the difference between these two episodes. A child who has a nightmare is easily awoken and normally has a memory of their dream. However, a child who has a night terror is not easily woken and will have no memory of the dream.

Neither of these occurrences are generally harmful to a child. After a nightmare, a parent should comfort their child and reassure them that they are safe. It can be scary for a child waking after a bad dream and it’s completely normal that they seek comfort from their parents.

During a night terror, a parent should ensure that their child is in a safe space where they cannot harm themselves. After a night terror the child will not be easily awoken so as long as they are in a safe space and once the terror has subsided the parent can leave the child to sleep.

Things that parents can do to reduce these nightmares and night terrors include:

  • Minimise TV watching;
  • Minimise technology use;
  • Have in place a consistent and positive bedtime routine;
  • Try and minimise events that cause the child extra stress or anxiety;
  • Ensure your child is getting the recommended amount of sleep in each 24 hour period to eliminate overtiredness.

It’s also important for parents to remember that nightmares and night terrors are common in toddlers and it’s not something they generally need to worry about. Nightmares and night terrors are usually a phase that will pass, however if a parent has concerns then it’s always important to seek advice from a medical practitioner. Sleep Consulting by Sleepy Starz can provide helpful advice on any sleep related issues. We also offer a range of affordable sleep consultation packages which can be found at www.sleepystarz.com/sleep-consulting/

Maintaining a Healthy Relationship with Young Children

Maintaining a Healthy Relationship with Young Children

Emily and Nat Duffell founded Sleepy Starz Pty Ltd as they wanted to ensure that other parents of young children didn’t experience the same sleep deprivation they did when their first born was young. Sleepy Starz provide sleep solutions, products, APPS and sleep consulting services to help young children, and their parents achieve a better night’s sleep. But, as many parents know, maintaining a healthy marriage/relationship with each other can become a mission when your children constantly need your attention day and night. Emily and Nat became first time parents to their baby girl Amber in 2009 and Amber refused to sleep through the night. Emily and Nat dealt with this all through Amber’s baby and toddler years to the point where Emily developed post natal depression. As things started to improve, they realised there had to be a better sleep solution, so they invented a toddler sleep training clock for toddlers to help them to get to sleep and form good sleeping patterns.

“The first few years of parenthood can be really tough on both parents,” Ms Duffell said earlier today.

“We were first time parents and as with many, we were thrown in a world of the unexpected. Our daughter was a terrible sleeper and would only sleep for an hour or two at a time.

“After this happening repeatedly over some years, it starts to put a strain on your relationship if it goes unchecked.

“Many people will deny it but in reality, when you have young children it’s very hard to find any quiet time together.

“Our children barely slept through the night before we invented the Sleepy Starz Sleep Training Clock as we were constantly up with them.

“I realised that there just had to be a better option out there because it was torturous. We tried a few different techniques to get our daughter to sleep but nothing really worked.

“But having quality time together is key to maintaining a healthy marriage. It can be work, to stay connected but it is all worth it.

“My advice to any parent that is finding it difficult to cope with a young child that doesn’t sleep is to get yourself a Sleepy Starz Sleep Training Clock and fast.  It will help your kids sleep and form good sleeping patterns and it will also save your marriage/relationship.

“The Sleepy Starz Sleep Clock features a 15 minute countdown timer, to prepare your child for bed 15 minutes before you actually want them to sleep and it even features a nightlight function.

“It’s a great way to get the little ones to sleep so that you can have some quality time together.

“The sleep clock we have developed is home grown and tested, as our daughter grew we continued to research so we could help others with the ideal sleep-training clock.”

Preparing a Toddler for a New Sibling

Preparing a Toddler for a New Sibling

Welcoming a new baby into the family can be a tough time for a little child. There are a million emotions that go through their little minds and handling the big change can be quite tough for them. Suddenly, they are not the only child, mum and dad’s attention is not just on them, they are getting less attention…..it’s quite a big deal for any little human being.

With that being said, there are a number of things parents can do to help their toddler and prepare them for the impending arrival of their new sibling.

Sometimes things get easier to comprehend when you talk about them a lot, especially when it involves young children and toddlers. When a child is aged 2 or so years, it’s surprising how much you can talk to them and reason with them. With that being said each child and each family will be different and there is no one hard and fast rule that will work for every child.

Emily Duffell, Sleep Consultant and co-founder of SleepyStarz Pty Ltd shares her tips on preparing a toddler for the arrival of a new baby:

“Preparing a toddler for the arrival of a new baby can be tricky. What you can do is talk to them about what’s happening, practice role plays with dolls, and when the baby does arrive set aside special ‘mummy/daddy and toddler time’ which could be reading a book, doing a puzzle, playing a game or something similar.

It is also really important to make sure that your toddler is already sleeping well by the time the new baby arrives. As a sleep consultant and mum who has experienced the difficulties associated with getting my daughter to sleep, I know how important this is for new parents and the health and well-being of the whole family. This is why I created the Sleepy Starz Sleep Training Clock, to help parents get their kids to sleep, stay in bed and to develop good sleeping patterns.”

Emily has recently launched a new service:  Sleep Consulting by Sleepy Starz. Sleep Consulting by Sleepy Starz offers a range of affordable packages. All consultations are conducted in a supportive and non judgmental manner. Go to www.sleepystarz.com/sleep-consulting/ for more information.

Why I Do What I Do

Why I Do What I Do

When someone asked you as a child “what are you going to be when you grow up?” how many of you are actually doing what you said?

Well, I never believed I would become an inventor, author and business owner. Even at the end of high school I thought I was going to be a lawyer and actually went on to complete a Law Degree.

However, then I had children. I became sleep deprived after my first born refused to sleep. I suffered post-natal depression and thought I was a failure as a parent. Every day I asked myself the same questions “What am I doing wrong?” “Why won’t my child sleep?” I was one of those parents that was desperate for sleep and tried every product out on the market to get my child sleeping. But, nothing worked!

After recovering from my bout of post natal depression, I realised that there was a need for better sleep solutions for babies, toddlers and parents. Along with my husband, we brainstormed and talked about our myriad of ideas. By this time, our first born was a toddler and we knew by this point that we needed to create a toddler sleep training clock that really worked.

I buried myself in research and vowed to educate myself about sleeping habits in babies and children. We weren’t going to create a sleep training clock until we were experts in the field of sleep. After my research phase and during the early stages of inventing our clock, I decided to put my new found knowledge to paper and wrote a book called Bedtime Battles: No More. This book is available for sale in both hardback and kindle format in the Amazon stores online. I was desperate to help other parents and families achieve better sleep, because we went through such a hard time ourselves.

Our toddler sleep training clock took about 3 years to develop. During that time we developed prototypes and used our own children and friend’s children as test dummies. We worked out what worked and what didn’t work and continued the development process. The final product, which is now available for sale, is the Sleepy Starz Sleep Clock. We knew we had to create a product that was different to anything else on the market. But, more importantly than that, we had to create a product that actually worked and that children associated with. And, that’s exactly what we did. During the three years of development we had both the parent and child in mind in terms of what features this clock needed to possess to make it a success. The Sleepy Starz Sleep Clock has more features than any other sleep training clock on the market worldwide. This is the very reason it was granted an Australian innovation patent and has a worldwide patent pending.

The release of our sleep training clock saw enormous success and we received and are still receiving phenomenal feedback from happy customers across the nation which is a really endearing feeling.

After the release of our sleep clock, I wanted to do more and offer more to families that needed help. I embarked on a new journey which involved becoming a certified sleep consultant. I added one more title to my list of what I do now (which looks nothing like the picture in my head when I finished high school!).

My mission now is to help other parents and families achieve better sleep so they don’t have to go through what we did. Sleepy Starz offers a range of sleep solutions for babies, toddlers and families. We are here to help and we want to help! Head to www.sleepystarz.com for more information.

Sleep Consulting and Sleep Training

Sleep Consulting and Sleep Training

There are a lot of mistruths and misleading information out there about sleep consulting and sleep training. Sleep training for babies and toddlers is something that is offered all over the world by consultants, doctors, hospitals and so on. And, the type of consultation or sleep training method you receive does depend on the professional you choose. Sleep consultants and professionals have different views on sleep training and what methods should and shouldn’t be used. It’s important for parents to research the services being offered by a particular professional before engaging their services to ensure that their approach is something they are comfortable with. There are many professionals who believe that ‘crying it out is a perfectly fine method to use on a baby, and then there are consultants like myself who never use the ‘cry it out’ method.

Sleep Consulting by Sleepy Starz uses gentle approaches and we work with children, babies and families on an individual basis. There is no one child that is exactly the same, so each case is treated  individually and we tailor a plan specific to that particular child and family. What’s more is that we never condone ‘cry it out’. Crying can be stressful to both the baby and the parent and there are so many gentler methods that can be used which is what we prefer to do. In some cases and in some fussier children, controlled crying is a method which we might adopt, but only to the extent that the family is comfortable. It’s a known fact that the parent knows their child better than anyone. With this in mind, Sleep Consulting by Sleepy Starz consultants works with the parents and not against them to come up with the best solution possible moving forward. Our consultants will work out what is going on at night time (and day time if naps are an issue) and work with the family to tailor an individualised plan to get sleep happening.

Sleep Consulting by Sleepy Starz works with clients from all over the world and we offer extremely affordable packages. We respectfully work with all parenting styles including attachment parents. All of our consultations are conducted in a supportive and non judgmental manner. Our certified consultants want to help parents feel empowered and confident with the eventual goal of the child falling sleep independently and sleeping through the night. However, we do not force things to happen. We take things one step at a time starting with the consultation where the consultant try and understand the entire picture and work out what is happening. With most of our sleep consultation packages, parents will receive a detailed evaluation at the end of the consultation and this includes a summary of what was discussed as well as a detailed sleep training plan.
