Why I Love The Sleepy Starz Sleep Clock
Why I Love The Sleepy Starz Sleep Clock

There are many sleep training clocks on the market…..and all of them come with promises of working magic. But truth be told, there is only really one that works…..and I’ve tried them all! God knows how much money I’ve spent on trying different products to get my 3 year old to sleep. As a sleep deprived mother I was willing to give anything a go but had almost given up before stumbling across this clock.

Sleepy Starz Toddler Sleep Clock

My daughter had always been a terrible sleeper. But things got even worse when it was time to move her from her cot (which she was climbing out of) to her big girl bed. She refused to go to sleep and would get out of bed 5-6 times before finally falling asleep. And, this would last for a period of 1-2 hours some nights. This, coupled with the 5am wake up time was driving me crazy.

A friend of mine told me about the Sleepy Starz Sleep Clock and how she had been using it with her 2.5 year old daughter. She said they’d had really positive results and sleep in their household was much better as a result. So……I thought ‘why not’!

Sleepy Starz Baby Sleep Solution

My clock arrived 2 days later and my daughter was instantly smitten with the free teddy bear included in the box. I was actually quite surprised at how easy the clock was to set up as Im not a very technological person. I just used the instructions that are in the clock itself (not the booklet). My daughter chose the scene with the teddy bear and for the first night in a very long time……she stayed in bed and fell asleep. Ok….she did get up a couple of times around 1am……but to my delight, she stayed in bed until 6.30am despite being awake earlier. Over the following few nights she was getting out of bed less and less. Two months later and I am no longer sleep deprived!

What I love about the clock are the features and being able to chose the settings that suit my daughter. We use the 15 minute countdown every night and during this time we read the book in the clock about the free teddy bear. In the beginning I had to use the lock feature…..but I haven’t had to use this for about 1 month now. My daughter loves a lit up room, so we set the brightness controller to high so it acts as a night light. This clock really is value for money and I highly recommend it for any parents suffering from sleep deprivation!

How to Avoid Toddler Bedtime Battles
How to Avoid Toddler Bedtime Battles

We all know that dealing with toddlers is not an easy task at times. You often have to use a lot of different techniques to get your child to sleep. Often toddlers will resist sleep and it can be a challenging task for a parent to settle them. However, the good news is that there are ways to avoid toddler bedtime battles and some of them are mentioned below:

Toddler Bedtime Battles

Ensure your toddler is ready to sleep – Both overtiredness and undertiredness can affect your toddler’s ability to get to sleep. Ensure that you are not putting your child to bed too early. If they are not tired enough they will not sleep. On the opposite end, also ensure that your toddler is not overtired. Overtiredness will also make it very difficult for your toddler to get to sleep. Watch out for overtired signs in the lead up to bedtime and if you notice that your little one is showing these signs then bring the bedtime forward.

Routine- A good bedtime routine in the 30 minutes prior to bedtime is a must. Young children strive off routine and they will sleep a lot better if a good bedtime routine is in place. Things to include in a good bedtime routine include bath, bottle/breast/cup of milk, massage, story, cuddle etc.

Independence – Toddlers like to feel important and special in everything they do. Try and find a little job that they can do that is part of the bedtime routine. The job only has to be little such as switching off the light, turning on the night light or putting their book away. You will be surprised at the sense of independence they feel and how this positively affects their sleep.

Dark room – Ensure that the light outside is blocked out. Often during daylight savings time, it’s still light when you put your toddler to sleep and this can affect sleep. If you can block out the light from outside then this is best. A dim nightlight is fine however.

Dim the lights 30 minutes before bed – Darkness helps produce melatonin which is also known as the sleepy hormone. Dimming the lights 30 minutes before sleep time helps melatonin built in your child’s

Ensure the room is at the correct temperature – Temperature can hugely affect your toddler’s ability to get to sleep. It’s important to ensure your child’s room is not too hot and not too cold as well as ensure they are dressed appropriately. It’s also important to take into consideration that the coldest part of the night is around 4:00-5:00am so your toddler also needs to be dressed appropriately for this time of night.

Daytime Activities for Toddlers
Daytime Activities for Toddlers

It is a must to arrange some daytime activities for toddlers to make them active throughout the day. If they are active during the day time then they will sleep better at night. There are so many day time activities which can make your toddlers active and some of them are indoor and some are outdoor. Have a look at the list below for some day time activities to do with your toddler:

bolls activities for toddlers

  1. Get creative and use items around the house such as cardboard to make trains, airplanes, houses etc that are easy to assemble and disassemble. This will keep your kids active and they can even try to disassemble it themselves.
  2. Give your toddler some musical instruments which are specially made for toddlers. You can even find things around the house that they can use as instruments and make noise with. Your toddler will use their own creative ideas while playing with it whilst at the same time developing their artistic skills.
  3. Give your toddler safe kitchen items that are different to their normal toys. Toddlers strive on change and different things to play with and they will absolutely love playing with different kitchen gadgets.                                                                                                                                                                                      swimming activities for toddlers
  4. Get creative with arts and crafts. Buy some paints, brushes and paper and let your toddler explore colors whilst getting dirty. Whilst the clean up can be a bit annoying, your toddler will love the experience of paining.
  5. Put some music on and dance! Dancing is a great way to keep toddlers active and most little children seem to adore music. See the smile light up your child’s face when you dance with them!
  6. Set up different activities such as a ball station, skipping rope station, hopping station and so forth. Get your toddler to make their way around the different stations. This is a great way to not only keep your toddler active but is also a fantastic way to get them outside.

Is It Ok To Help My Baby Get To Sleep?
Is It Ok To Help My Baby Get To Sleep?

“Is it okay to assist my baby to sleep?” The answer is yes. Your child’s health is likely to be a high priority and you already know that kids get very cranky and difficult if they don’t get enough sleep!

This is a controversial topic as some believe that assisting a baby to sleep will stop them learning the skill of self settling. I disagree. I do not see a problem with assisting a baby or young child to sleep. Having difficulty falling asleep is a common problem and some babies and children need more help in this area.

‘Assisting’ to sleep can include a variety of different things such as feeding to sleep, patting to sleep or just being in the child’s room with them and singing. No matter what method you choose to help your little one fall asleep…..it’s ok!

Young babies especially often need a lot of help falling to sleep. Self settling is a skill that needs to be learnt and takes time. Some babies might learn this skill early on but it might take others well into the toddler years to learn. Is it ok to help a 3 year old fall asleep? In my opinion, the answer is yes as long as the parent is comfortable in doing so.

I believe it’s a myth that assisting a baby to sleep will cause them to never learn the skill of self settling. When a child is ready to fall asleep independently they will do so. What I do encourage parents to do though, is to only help the child fall asleep if they need it. If they don’t need assistance in falling to sleep then there is no need to do it.

Some parents find they get quite anxious about their child learning to self settle. It’s important for parents to manage expectations. Is it ok to expect a 5 month old to fall asleep on their own? No, I don’t believe it is. Some 5 month old babies might be able to get to sleep by themselves, but if they cannot then there is no issue in helping them. This will not stop them learning the skill of self settling when they are ready.

Is it ok to expect a 3 year old to fall asleep independently? Whilst I don’t believe it’s ok to “expect” them to do so, I do believe its fine for a parent of a 3 year old to want them to learn this skill. And, there are lots of different things that can be done to help them learn the skill of self settling.

As a sleep consultant I work with a lot of families who are keen to teach their babies and young children the skill of self settling. If the baby is of an appropriate age then I work closely with the baby and the parents to gently teach this skill using a variety of sleep training methods. Sometimes it only takes a matter of days for the baby to pick up this new skill but sometimes it takes 2-3 weeks.
